Northern Irelands Kevin Burness came unstuck last night against Dutch darts superstar Jelle Klaasen, losing out 3-1 in a good display of arrows, in the first round of the PDC World Championship.
The man from Ballywalter went ahead 1-0 in sets with some great finishing, but then Klaasen got into his stride with a 152 finish and hit the after burners and in quick succession was in front 2-1 in sets. Then in the 4th set Burness was on 72 required and blew it by hitting big eight rather than sixteen which meant he had to go 14 and bull, which he missed. Klaasen came back for tops and duly hit it with ease for the win.
Kevin can feel hard done by, this is the second year at the PDC worlds where he has had difficult draws. Last year he had Gary Anderson and this year he had Klaasen with MVG waiting thereafter.
Klaasen came a cropper against MVG in the second round at the end of the night, but he himself will feel he should have had the first 2 sets and MVG hit his usual 170 and 130 checkouts ‘at the right moments’.
Kevin comes away from the PDC Worlds with a £7,500 payday which is more than his full year in 2019 on the Pro Tour. He now has to go to back to the PDC Q school as he is outside of the top 64 in ranking money.
Well done to Kevin in getting through to the worlds for the second year. We have no doubt if he plays his best, he can come through Q School again.
Back at it again this weekend, we have county matches up and down the country in the Northern Ireland Darts Organisation.
7 vs 5 – Both areas lost their first games and will be looking to get a win here in division 1. Area 7 have some great players in Daniel McDonald and Jukie Watt to name a couple but Area 5 have an up and coming squad and will be up for this too.
12 vs 10 – Area 12 Belfast will be looking to add to their win last time out and keep up the pressure on Area 2. But Area 10 have some fantastic throwers in Adrian Devine and co. Could go either way this one.
4b vs 2b – Area 4b will be hosting the Stingers this Saturday looking to get a win after an opening loss. The Stingers had some great averages last time out and Scott Withers will be hoping for same again I hear, big Kev Magill has to deflate Scott’s head before Saturday.
2 vs 9 – The two most fancied teams in Division 1 are 2 and 9 and they face off on Saturday in Ballymena. Geoff Wylies Area 2 will have their hands full with Kyle Mckinstry, Roy Montgomery and Philip Carson and co. Both teams capable of doing a lot of damage, who knows who wins this one?
13 vs 1 – Area 13 in Dromore will host Coleraine Area 1. Area 1 will be looking for a win after losing their opening fixture, so I expect a strong challenge from Area 1. Area 13 with their 9 dart hero Warren Penney will be ready for the battle.
2c vs 4r – Area 2c host 4r who top the table. 4r were impressive enough in their opening win and will look to press ahead their advantage. Hopefully 2c and The Chief Colin Mcgarry can take some legs off them.
11 vs 9b – Area 11 versus 9b. Mark Mclernon and Area 11 will be looking for the home advantage to help out on this fixture, 9b look to have quite a few good throwers this season and could be difficult opponents for anyone.
9c vs 2d – Area 9c will be hosting Area 2d. A wee day out for 2d, hopefully Paul McDonald and Davy Martin can keep the lads sober enough for the trip down to Armagh lol.
Good luck with the arrows this week lads, and remember to enjoy your darts, win or lose.
